Q. What is Male Journey UK?
Male Journey is a charity with no paid employees so is a ‘not for profit’ organisation which is entirely funded by fees paid for events and donations. We affirm and support men seeking a life-long journey of spiritual consciousness in order to transform themselves, and through these journeys, their relationships, families, workplaces, communities and our environment. There is a spiritual basis to the way in which men on this journey work with other men, shoulder to shoulder in change and transformation.

Q. Is this a religious event?
A. No. Men of all traditions, faiths and none are all welcome to participate. Whilst the Rites have roots in the Judeo-Christian heritage, the stories, images, and rituals which are used are drawn from a wide range of religious and non-religious wisdom traditions. The rites of passage on which Male Journey’s approach is based was created by a Christian Franciscan Monk, Richard Rohr over 20 years ago. The basic structure has remained the same but has been modified to ensure it is acceptable to men of any faith, religion or none. Over 5000 men worldwide have completed the programme.

Q. Some traditional initiations involve some form of physical wounding. Do these?
No. There is no physical wounding in the Rites nor are these tests of endurance or stamina.

Q. Where would we sleep?
Men sleep in tents in nature. Participants are told what to bring in good time before the event and what can be provided for those unable to bring their own - like tent.

Q. Is there an age limit?
A. There is no upper age limit. Attendees under 28 may wish to consider taking a young men’s rites of passage. If you are unsure if the rites are right for you at this time in your life we invite you to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Q. How fit do I need to be?
A. It is important to note that you need to have basic mobility and health that will allow fasting and moderate physical effort. This can be a physically, emotionally and spiritually demanding experience that might challenge some deeply held perspectives about yourself and life.  However the Rites do not require anything other than ‘normal’ fitness. If you feel unsure on this, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss.

Q. If I submit an application am I guaranteed a place on the event?
No! Every application is assessed by assessors who seek to determine if the timing is right for the man to attend this event. Is our event appropriate for him as we know that it has the power to connect very deeply and start a process of transformation. This is not just another men’s retreat.

Q. How much does it cost?
The 2024 rites costs £500. There is a bursary fund so that men can apply for support if their financial situation makes paying the full amount difficult. Payment can also be made on a monthly basis to spread the period over which payment is made.

Q. What would happen if I struggle during the event?
A. Members of the elder team are available at all times and can be approached for confidential conversation. They create and hold a container in which you can know you are safe and supported. Please note that if you are feeling overwhelmed in daily life and struggling to function normally this is not a good time to apply for the Rites.

Q. Where can I find a man I can talk to to get first hand experience of this event?
A. Please request a call-back from one of our volunteer team. Simply enter your details on the form on the main Rites webpage or contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
