Younger Men's Rites

The Younger Men's Rites is a life changing experience for men 18 - 28.
During the 5 days in nature we explore the transition from adolescence to manhood.
It is a physical, emotional and spiritual challenge.
It will be hard. It will test you.

But you will also experience a sense of purpose and see how you fit into a larger story.  You will receive tools for your journey as you walk a shared path – one that many have walked before.  This is an utterly grounding experience that will hold you, help you grow and open up new beginnings.

The Rites is not a teaching retreat - it is a felt and lived experience. It’s more about feeling it in your gut, than understanding it with your head. This is the doorway to the rest of your life. Set in wild land in Northumberland, the Younger Men’s Rites involves living outdoors and participating in a range of practical group activities, solo-time, discussions, journaling and wilderness time.

The Younger Men's Rites is led by a team of experienced elders who have themselves been through the programme. Supporters and Fathers of the men attending are invited to assist the Rites in various ways.

Feedback

“the best thing that I've ever done for myself, and I know that this was in no small part down to
the leap of faith that I made in going for it with very limited foreknowledge”

YMROP 2017

“…the elders were so open and vulnerable, that I felt comfortable to do the same.
It's crazy to think of how us guys are never able to truly express ourselves and
the power in having other men to be real and honest with.”

Men's Rites of Passage

Men's Rites

A 5-day life changing program for men devised by Richard Rohr OFM which has been undertaken by over 5000 men across the world.

This is not about religion, but about spirituality.  About age-old traditions that guide men into manhood.  About coming to trust that there is something much greater at work in your life than you could ever imagine. Taking you sometimes OUT of your comfort zones, but more deeply back into your own life. You may find yourself mentally, intellectually, emotionally or spiritually challenged. This is part of the experience for some men: it may feel risky or uncomfortable; you may not always feel in control. Throughout the 5 days you will be held by an experienced team of male elders who have all previously undertaken the Rites themselves. As the Elders take you through the process of the Rites you will experience drumming, ritual, fire, silence, small groups, wilderness, solo-time, teaching ... and more.

The Men's Rites of Passage are suitable for men of all colour, age, sexuality, ethnicity and faith tradition (or no faith); men with more severe physical disabilities are asked to provide more details of their restrictions during the application process and we will provide further advice.

The Rites in 2018

The Men's Rites in 2018 will be held on 25-29 July 2018 at The Bield at Blackruthven, nr Perth, PH1 1PY

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2018 RITES HAVE NOW CLOSED

(See a list of all the MROPs taking place throughout the world on the Illuman.org website - opens in a new tab)

How much will it cost?

We endeavour to keep our costs down as much as we are able (none of the Elders are paid) while also trying to allow for the fact that men from all walks of life are welcome to undertake the Rites.

  • The 2018 confirmed price is £417 - and is only kept this low because the team of some 14 men give their time voluntarily.
  • We invite all those who can afford it to make an additional donation towards our bursary fund.
  • If you are unwaged or in difficult financial circumstances we have a bursary fund; you are encouraged to request bursary assistance on the application form.

We also endeavour to run a car pooling scheme among the men undertaking the Rites to both save costs and be environmentally sensitive.

How do I get there?

You need to arrive at The Bield between 2pm and 3:30pm on the opening day.  You will be ready to leave The Bield no later than 4pm on the closing day.  The Bield is a short bus journey from Perth railway station and there are public transport options from Edinburgh airport - you will be sent full details of all the options in plenty of time before the Rites.  If you are not using public transport then we do encourage you to sign up to our car sharing list to reduce our environmental impact.

Where will I be staying?

You will need to bring a tent and sleeping bag etc.  All your meals are provided so you will not need cooking equipment.

If you are unable to camp for medical reasons then there is limited indoor accommodation available which is at a further cost of £150.

Naked feelings

There's a crack in everything

Death the only certainty

Initiation, that's what you need
